Call of Duty – Modern Warfare: Update deletes game progress!

Eigentlich the update recently published should 13.1 for – thrill players with the introduction of a new crossbow “Call of Duty Modern Warfare”. Instead, frustration spreads. Reports of annoyed gamblers, whose scores are gone after installing the update, are piling up online. The patch apparently incorrectly resets statistics, ranks, and unlocked weapons, and players unexpectedly face the shards of their progress that has been fought for months. Publisher Activision has already taken note of the serious bug and announced that it is working on a solution. It is still a long time coming. For the time being, the manufacturer only mentions an emergency solution .

Call of Duty – Modern Warfare: Save Scores

An error message precedes the loss of the data. This means that the game data found is defective or incomplete and you have to reset it. Regardless of whether players agree or decline at this point, the scores are gone afterwards. Therefore, developer Infinity Ward advises that if the error message appears, the game should be ended immediately and neither of the two options should be selected. This is not ideal, but there is at least a little all-clear. As soon as you have fixed the error, you should be able to restore the saved games. Only progress that you make in the meantime would be gone in this case. Ideally, keep your hands off the game until Activision gives the green light.

Call of Duty – Modern Warfare: Season 1 extended

The update was preceded by an extension of the first season of “Call of Duty – Modern Warfare”. Originally, it was supposed to end on February 4, 2020. If you have not yet met all season goals by then, you will now get a gallows deadline! As developer Infinity Ward announced , the new deadline is February 11, 2020. The reason for the additional term is the introduction of planned new content such as the crossbow. The studio is also planning further challenges and revised game modes and playlists as well as numerous events. It remains unclear whether the next season will start immediately after the end of Season 1.

Conclusion: Call of Duty – Modern Warfare

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” is undoubtedly a gripping shooter, an extensive package that has something for every action fan. In contrast to the 2007 original, it is not a milestone. This is because there are controversial scenes in single player mode, but they are rather disturbing or even morally questionable than “epic”. In multiplayer mode, developer Infinty Ward tries out cool new game ideas that absolutely liven up the game and bring a breath of fresh air to the games.

Test: Call of Duty – Modern Warfare

One of the most common criticisms of previous “Call of Duty” games was that the action game series was just a better clay pigeon shooting, but the content was irrelevant. In fact, there were at least individual missions that made the narrative component exciting or provocative. Just think of the “airport level” of “Modern Warfare 2”. “Well camouflaged” from the first “Modern Warfare” from 2007, in which the player has to sneak through the ruins of Chernobyl, is an example of how a game can become a milestone in a positive sense. The new edition of Modern Warfare does not offer such a level, but the 16th game of the series will be remembered. The COMPUTER BILD test reveals why this is the case.

Campaign without compromise

“We are all killers,” the villain “Wolf” exudes in one scene. Of course, he simply wants to provoke. But at its core his profane message contains a truth that not everyone should like. It even holds up a mirror to the so-called “good guys” because they too use questionable methods in a war without fronts that can hardly be morally justified. And so we are in the middle of the central conflict of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare”, which on the surface starts with a sneaky terrorist attack in London. A car bomb detonates at Piccadilly Circus, suicide bombers blow themselves up, heavily armed infantrymen fire at everything that moves. You as a player help end the attack, must keep an overview in the confusion of the explosions and not accidentally shoot civilians. As in all the other 14 levels, this leads to mission termination. This beat against London’s pulsating heart sets the pace for a game – in which regular combat with legitimate armies is the exception. As a rule, the battles are carried out with paramilitary troops or special units, whose command is the secret service.

Farah Karim is at the center of the action, leading the insurgents in Urzikstan.

Torture, terror and murder

The plot fits into the current political world, pointing the narrative finger in front of everyone to the Middle East. Real actors are not named, however – if you ignore the usual suspects such as the United States and Russia. The “Piccadilly” mission becomes a yardstick for the direction of the game at the latest when a certain Captain Price appears on the scene – the well-known and popular elite soldier represents the old school, makes no compromises. True to the motto: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”. His unwavering demeanor should demonstrate right from the start that only hard bandages and extreme decisions lead to success. That the border is crossed more and more often in the course of the game, the Geneva Convention is overridden and the moral compass is lost, is sometimes hard to bear for gamers, as mentioned at the beginning, the new Modern Warfare does not have a glorious mission that could be used as a figurehead. What makes the new edition so special are a whole series of at least borderline scenes that will cause discussion: It is about torture, terror and murder – this time, killing does not stop at women and children. Most of these situations are so well integrated in the context that they cannot be dismissed as pure media provocation. It is hard tobacco, for example, when you have to dig out a possible terror cell to get information and also to fire on women who attack the player. But in the sense of the game and the attempt to depict reality, violence to protect your own virtual life is probably legitimate at this point. The problem is that there is no confrontation with the consequences and children who are left behind are simply left to their own devices.

The fact that children have to kill people here goes too far.

Al Qaida from Urzikstan

It becomes even more difficult when the trail of terrorists leads to the fictional country of Urzikstan, where you can meet insurgents. They fight against the terrorists (a kind of Al Qaeda), but they also have to deal with a regime that is protected by Russia. Her commander is called Farah Karim, you get to know her a lot better during the game. It is an almost intimate, disturbing outside discussion with the motivation for her actions, why she does everything to fight occupiers and terrorists. Players experience firsthand how Farah loses her parents. How she asserts herself against brutal Russian soldiers as a child. And how she finally takes the gun in her own hand to kill. Developer Infinity Ward commits a first border crossing here: it’s one thing to show children fleeing soldiers – the other is to have children killed in a video game. It is similarly hard when Farah is tortured several times (waterboarding) – which is quite acceptable in the context. After all, the players have the choice to skip the scene. Just because something should be presented as real as possible and approved by military advisors, you don’t have to show it or make it playable. This also applies to derisive comments in another scene in which soldiers enjoy “roasting” enemies. Contempt for human beings may seem like this in reality, but it does not belong in a video game. Fortunately, the moral compass is straightened at the latest when the game punishes killing civilians – the more often this happens, the worse the evaluation of the operation.

From time to time the developers add new game mechanics. Here a woman must be led to freedom.

Technology behind Battlefield 5

Call of Duty remains true to its roots in a playful way, the adventure is as straightforward as ever, only that the exaggerated pathos is largely avoided and the Michael Bay memorial moments can be counted on one hand. You fight your way through a message, rush through a freight station and then shoot through narrow tunnels again. There are few playful surprises – for example, if you are to guide a civilian past enemies to freedom using camera images and radio only. Elsewhere, the usual fantasies of power come to fruition, one shoots rocket fires with a laser pointer, acts in the classic way as a sniper or sneaks around enemy lines with a silencer weapon. The routine staging is varied enoughA word about technology: Yes, Infinity Ward has graphically upgraded the game. This means that Call of Duty has at least reached an acceptable visual level without now ripping out trees. Compared to games like “Battlefield 5”, however, you are still lagging behind, with mostly stable 60 frames per second you cannot offer terrain destruction, which is particularly noticeable in multiplayer mode.

Of course, the mandatory sniper mission should not be missing.

New in multiplayer

At first glance, the multiplayer mode is completely classic, has the usual modes (e.g. Deathmatch) and lets you collect and level up a variety of weapons. Fortunately, Infinity Ward dares to launch a few new modes and at least numerically pimp up old camels. Deathmatch can now be played on larger 20vs20 cards, for example. That works well, but likes to degenerate into even more chaos than usual. If only because more players mean that “death from above” rains more often when players use their kill rewards.Perhaps the most prominent newcomer is called Ground War – it is also based on a clear numerical upgrade – and what a thing: for call-of-duty conditions, revolutionary changes are taking place here. If it is otherwise on rather small cards with up to a dozen players, 64 players (32v32) shoot at each other. And not just with infantry armament – you can also go into battle with tanks and attack helicopters or bridge the great distances on the huge maps. But it is not only the vehicles that add a new playful touch, the more vertical terrain also provides an expansion of the play options. For example, the skyscrapers on some maps (eg “Tavorsk District”) are ideal for players who like to snip themselves.

Call of Duty - Modern Warfare: © Activision

How far can you go? Mental torture emanating from the player is hard to bear.

Gunfight is a highlight

A second multiplayer highlight is “Gunfight”. This is an extremely fast mode on very small maps, in which only two players compete against each other on both sides. The action is so fast that the matches are often decided after a few seconds. Whoever makes the first mistake immediately falls behind, so the skill of individual players is more important than in conventional modes. The Cyberwar mode is also outstanding. At first it plays like the well-known “Search and Destroy”. The goal here is that the teams try to be the first to detonate a bomb and thus win, or to eliminate all other opponents. The latter succeeded significantly more often in the test, although it is possible to revive other players and thus improve the chances of winning. All multiplayer modes have one thing in common: the matches play very quickly and without long waiting times for respawn – in addition, the well-known series of kills are the focus of the action. If you line up many kills, you get access to particularly strong special attacks and can really heat up the opponent. Incidentally, this also works across platforms, because Modern Warfare supports crossplay: PC, PS4 and Xbox players gamble together. Anyone who does not want to compete against gamers with a mouse / keyboard as a console player can explicitly exclude this.If you are looking for a special challenge, you should take a close look at the Special Ops mode. The goal here is to overcome extremely strong opponents in special missions based on the campaign. The missions last up to two hours and require four well communicating players. A very hard chunk for professionals!

monetization

Activision and Infinity Ward rejected the microtransactions. According to Patrick Kelly, managing director of the developer, there are no loot boxes in Modern Warfare and the season pass is also canceled. At a later time, there should only be a kind of “Battle Pass”, as you know it from games like “Fortnite”. Under no circumstances do you want to sell “functional items”. Basic weapons, for example, will be available as free rewards – if you want the “pink” premium version, you may have to purchase it together with other seasonal content in the “Battle Pass” for real money.

Advantage for PS4 players

In mid-September, Activision announced that PlayStation 4 owners would enjoy an “exciting Day 1 benefit” while playing “Call of Duty – Modern Warfare”. In the meantime, the manufacturer has unveiled the secret – and has nuised users of other platforms. Sony fans don’t get an exclusive uniform or a special weapon, they get a complete game mode for themselves! As Activision now announced, PS4 gamers plunge into a game variant called “Special Ops – Survival Mode”.

Mode one year PS4 exclusive

Activision advertises the mode as a time-exclusive bonus for the PlayStation 4, but the duration of the action goes beyond the usual framework for such inputs. In fact, players on other platforms will only receive “survival mode” on October 1, 2020, a full year later. At this point, the next “Call of Duty” spin-off is probably already in the starting blocks and interest in the mode should be long gone. Players are accordingly not very enthusiastic about this measure and are heavily against Activision’s plans in the comments on the latest trailer .
